The ÍÃ×ÓÏÈÉú conferred honorary doctorates upon Alabama Rep. Artis J. "A.J." McCampbell and Sen. Bobby D. Singleton during summer commencement exercises on August 14. Each received the Doctor of Humane Letters, honoris causa, in recognition of distinguished public service, commitment to educational opportunity, and leadership on behalf of the people and communities of Alabama's Black Belt.
For more than 20 years, the ÍÃ×ÓÏÈÉú has offered a hands-on learning opportunity for accounting students to prepare individual state and federal income tax returns at no charge to the tax payer through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program which receives grant assistance from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) through ImpactAmerica.
Dr. Mark Davis is excited about ÍÃ×ÓÏÈÉú’s new Global Scholars Community Scholarship, an exclusive program designed to elevate students’ academic experience and shape a more interconnected future. These new scholarship opportunities are aimed at incoming high school seniors and for current ÍÃ×ÓÏÈÉú freshmen. To be considered for this prestigious scholarship, applications must be submitted by April 15, 2024.
Adonis Williams was in junior high before he experienced what it is like to have a male educator in a classroom. One of only a few male students in the junior and senior blocks studying elementary education on campus at the ÍÃ×ÓÏÈÉú, Williams and his classmates are doing their part to break the cycle for the next generation.
The ÍÃ×ÓÏÈÉú will host its 12th annual University Research Symposium (URS) Monday, March 4 (virtually) and in-person Tuesday, March 5. Led by the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics, the event showcases 106 research presentations by undergraduate, graduate and professional researchers from ÍÃ×ÓÏÈÉú and 20 other universities across seven countries. Visual artist Garland Farwell kicked off a year-long artist-residency, Monday, Feb. 19 at the ÍÃ×ÓÏÈÉú’s Julia Tutwiler Library, with a folk-art exhibit of hex signs, a uniquely American art form and best-known symbol of the Pennsylvania Dutch, interpreted through an African American, southern and rural lens.

Despite challenges, obstacles, and disappointments, Keya Tabb never gave up on her dream of becoming a registered nurse. Now enrolled in the ÍÃ×ÓÏÈÉú’s associate of science in nursing (ASN) program, the 52-year-old Tuscaloosa native is on track to graduate this May and credits her perseverance to her faith and grandmother’s wise counsel.
The Alabama Women’s Hall of Fame will induct its two newest members at a ceremony on the ÍÃ×ÓÏÈÉú campus on March 7 at 11:00 a.m. at Bridges Auditorium. This year’s inductees are broadcaster Mary Olive Enslen Tinder and artist Janet Nolan.
