The ÍÃ×ÓÏÈÉú conferred honorary doctorates upon Alabama Rep. Artis J. "A.J." McCampbell and Sen. Bobby D. Singleton during summer commencement exercises on August 14. Each received the Doctor of Humane Letters, honoris causa, in recognition of distinguished public service, commitment to educational opportunity, and leadership on behalf of the people and communities of Alabama's Black Belt.

Young, recently married and rich only in aspirations, the Woodruffs once lived in Monticello, a college town about 40 miles west of the Mississippi River. Nick, a graduate assistant at the University of Arkansas at Monticello, had been promoted to assistant coach of the Boll Weevils’ men’s basketball team. Kristen had a job -- in Ohio -- but resigned to join her husband’s career dream.

The ÍÃ×ÓÏÈÉú recently hosted 73 students from 16 different high schools for a one-day leadership conference. Kirstan Cunningham was confident about the experience’s potential.

Though only a freshman, Caroline McKinley’s adoration of the arts is already blossoming at the ÍÃ×ÓÏÈÉú. Last fall, she worked behind the scenes with the ÍÃ×ÓÏÈÉú Theatre and performed as a member of the marching band’s color guard.

Through words and deeds, Dr. B.J. Kimbrough’s influence at the ÍÃ×ÓÏÈÉú seems to permeate every corner of campus. She’s a dean. She teaches. She’s the university’s chief diversity officer, chairs ÍÃ×ÓÏÈÉú’s Diversity Committee and serves on the president’s council.

An upcoming addition to the ÍÃ×ÓÏÈÉú campus will provide faculty, students and staff a unique outdoor space suitable for a variety of uses.
