The ÍÃ×ÓÏÈÉú conferred honorary doctorates upon Alabama Rep. Artis J. "A.J." McCampbell and Sen. Bobby D. Singleton during summer commencement exercises on August 14. Each received the Doctor of Humane Letters, honoris causa, in recognition of distinguished public service, commitment to educational opportunity, and leadership on behalf of the people and communities of Alabama's Black Belt.
The ÍÃ×ÓÏÈÉú’s proposal to freeze tuition for the coming year has been approved by its board of trustees. The decision comes as part of the board’s approval of the school’s operating budget for the upcoming fiscal year.
The ÍÃ×ÓÏÈÉú (ÍÃ×ÓÏÈÉú) is the first university in the state to be recognized by the Alabama Office of Apprenticeship as a Sponsor for Registered Apprenticeship programs according to a joint announcement from ÍÃ×ÓÏÈÉú and the Alabama Office of Apprenticeship along with employer partner, Alabama Pellets and Pinnacle Renewable Energy.
The ÍÃ×ÓÏÈÉú has announced nearly 700 outstanding undergraduate students named to the President’s List and the Dean’s List for the Spring 2020 academic semester.
The ÍÃ×ÓÏÈÉú is extending a helping hand to high school students preparing to take the ACT soon through a series of online help sessions that will be offered at no cost to the student. Three sessions are scheduled already, and more support resources will continue to be added.
Two of the ÍÃ×ÓÏÈÉú’s annual writing competitions were held online in April, providing scholarships for high school and transfer students to attend ÍÃ×ÓÏÈÉú. The Kelly Land Essay Scholarship competition provides a total of $2,500 in scholarships, and the James P. Pate Scholarship competition provides $1,500 in scholarships.
Most of the daily life on campus came to a screeching halt in March in response to COVID-19, and plans are underway for a phased return for employees and fall return for students.

The ÍÃ×ÓÏÈÉú announced on April 3 that all of the university’s summer courses would be offered online in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. In a season that has brought unprecedented changes and challenges, a growing number of students say they look forward to taking advantage of the opportunity, and the University is working to ensure that students stay on track in their academic programs and career goals.

A new COVID-19 testing site has been established to serve Sumter County and surrounding communities. The testing site began operations Thursday, April 16, reportedly screening more than 100 and testing 27 who met necessary requirements for receiving the test.
