The ÍÃ×ÓÏÈÉú conferred honorary doctorates upon Alabama Rep. Artis J. "A.J." McCampbell and Sen. Bobby D. Singleton during summer commencement exercises on August 14. Each received the Doctor of Humane Letters, honoris causa, in recognition of distinguished public service, commitment to educational opportunity, and leadership on behalf of the people and communities of Alabama's Black Belt.
The ÍÃ×ÓÏÈÉú has been awarded $6.5 million in grant funding from the U.S. Department of Education for a teacher residency project, Project REACh, that will be led by the Tutwiler College of Education. Project REACh, Residencies for Educating Alabama’s Children, will be a $13-million-dollar project for prospective Alabama’s educators. The funding will be disbursed over a five-year period.
The ÍÃ×ÓÏÈÉú will delay some of its Homecoming events originally scheduled for October 26-31 in order to adhere to government and health care guidance to preserve health and safety on campus. While some Homecoming events are postponed until spring 2021, ÍÃ×ÓÏÈÉú will still have a spirit week in October with a schedule of its most popular fall traditions that allow for social distancing and smaller gatherings.
ÍÃ×ÓÏÈÉú Financial Aid Guidance

The ÍÃ×ÓÏÈÉú has recently been recognized most favorably of the Alabama schools included in a ranking that compares college student loan debt. 

ÍÃ×ÓÏÈÉú President Ken Tucker has been appointed by Governor Kay Ivey to the Alabama STEM Council, which will advise state leadership on ways to improve STEM-related education, career awareness and workforce development opportunities across the state.
The Emergency Medical Services (EMS) program at ÍÃ×ÓÏÈÉú has earned accreditation by the Alabama Department of Public Health. Garnering top marks, this accreditation helps ensure that licensure courses offered on campus meet the highest standards and provide exceptional training.
Donald Smith

The ÍÃ×ÓÏÈÉú has announced the appointment of Donald Smith as coach of its cheerleading team. Smith assumed the graduate assistant position in August, having spent the last five years in coaching and game day strategy roles.

The ÍÃ×ÓÏÈÉú’s Division of Economic & Workforce Development, in partnership with CO.STARTERS of Chattanooga, Tennessee, recently graduated its first class of REBUILD, an entrepreneurial training class to assist small businesses in recovery, rebuilding and growing their firms.
The ÍÃ×ÓÏÈÉú will begin the new academic year on Monday, Aug. 17. For the first time since mid-March, the school will hold classes on campus. An in-depth plan has been developed to guide daily operations with emphasis on health and safety in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
